Man United, Liverpool draw

updated 11:34 a.m. ET Oct. 15, 2011

LIVERPOOL, England - Substitute Javier Hernandez scored on a header in the 81st minute to help Manchester United draw 1-1 at Liverpool on Saturday and maintain its unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

Steven Gerrard opened the scoring for Liverpool, curling in a free kick in the 68th minute. He was making his first start in seven months.

"The free kick wasn't the best," Gerrard said. "The intention was to get it over the wall."

United, which began the game with leading scorer Wayne Rooney on the bench, has 20 points from eight games while Liverpool is fifth with 14 points.

"It's a real indication when you get in the dressing room afterwards and the players are all disappointed that they have drawn 1-1 with Manchester United," Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said. "That tells you how far they have come and we're delighted they're disappointed."

Among those in the capacity crowd of 45,065 at Anfield was LeBron James. The Miami Heat star watched Liverpool play live for the first time since becoming a minority owner of the club.

(AP) ? Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won the Korean Grand Prix on Sunday and the team clinched the Formula One constructors' championship.

Vettel, who started from second on the grid, passed pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton on the first lap and dominated the 55-lap race before crossing the finish line in 1 hour, 38 minutes, 01.994 seconds, 12 seconds ahead McLaren's Hamilton.

Red Bull's Mark Webber was third ? securing back-to-back constructors' titles for the team ? followed by McLaren's Jenson Button and Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso, with second through fifth tightly bunched crossing the line.

Vettel, who clinched his second straight drivers' championship at last weekend's Japanese GP, captured his 10th F1 victory of the season with three races remaining, meaning he still has a chance of matching Michael Schumacher's record of 13 wins in a season.

Sunday's race got off to a clean start with Vettel passing Hamilton on turn four of the first lap and opening up a 2.9-second lead over the McLaren driver after 10 laps.

Hamilton made his first pit stop after 16 laps and was followed in by Vettel. The safety car came out on the 17th lap after Renault driver Vitaly Petrov slammed into the back of Schumacher's Mercedes, ending the race for both.

At the restart three laps later, Vettel lead by 1.1 seconds over Hamilton, with Webber and Button following.

On lap 34, Hamilton and Webber both pitted and came out with Hamilton in second and Webber third. The two raced side-by-side with Hamilton holding his position.

Vettel made his final pit stop on lap 35, briefly giving up the lead to Alonso, who had yet to make his final pit stop. The German moved back into the top position on the 37th lap and held the lead until the end.

With Vettel holding a comfortable 11-second lead over the last 10 laps, much of the focus shifted to a heated battle for second place between Hamilton and Webber.

Webber did finally get past the Briton, but Hamilton immediately made use of the open rear wing to pass on the main straight and did well to hold off the Red Bull driver in the closing laps to finish second.

Red Bull had used a novel strategy in qualifying to save a set of the harder tires, but forecasts of three and four-stop strategies proved unfounded, with only two stops required.

Muhammad Yunus talks 'social business' in Haiti (AP)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti ? Economist Mohammad Yunus was the consummate storyteller, a fount of ideas on how to change Haiti.

Visiting from his native Bangladesh, the Nobel peace laureate poured out tale after tale Friday of how his concept of "social business" could apply to Haiti, a nation rife with woes well before last year's punishing earthquake.

Yunus told how he started his Grameen Foundation by lending $27 each to 42 illiterate women so they could pay off their debts, how a small yogurt business lessened malnutrition in Bangladesh and about the importance of creativity.

"There's a business world. There's a charity world," he told a hotel conference room crowded with college students and development workers. "Why can't we take those ideas and try to make money and also solve (social) problems?"

It was Yunus' first trip to Haiti, and he's certain to make more after he leaves Sunday.

The Grameen Creative Lab based in Germany, which he founded, opened an office in Haiti last year after the earthquake. It gave an $80,000 loan to a new vocational and computer-training school to cover startup costs, and it plans to hand out four more loans before year's end to other applicants with their own social business ideas.

Yunus, a celebrity in development circles for his ideas on helping the poor, recently joined a board of more than 30 philanthropists, former presidents and executives that seeks to advise Haitian President Michel Martelly on economic matters. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, also the United Nations special envoy to Haiti, is co-chairman.

Martelly and his advisers met with Yunus on Thursday on the grounds of the National Palace, still a crumbled heap of snow-white concrete almost two years after the January 2010 earthquake.

Yunus said the "social business" idea is different from the "microcredit" industry that he pioneered in the 1980s, when he gave tiny loans to poor people to help them start small businesses.

His Grameen Creative Lab focuses on the "social business" approach. It gives out bigger loans, between $10,000 and $100,000. The interest rate and duration of the loan are set according to the risk and type of business.

Whatever profit is earned by a "social business" financed by the lab goes back into expanding the company. The aim is that creation and expansion of businesses will help a society lessen ills like hunger and unemployment.

"This is a new paradigm," said Kesner Pharel, a Haitian economist who was among a panelists of microcredit experts at the hotel. "This guy can be on the same level as Steve Jobs ... This is a new form of capitalism. It's not only about the bottom line but about how the community is doing."

Following the conference, Yunus dashed off to talk with students at the vocational and computer-training school that got the Grameen Creative Lab loan. He told several dozen students that they should think of themselves as job givers, not job seekers.

The ideas that Yunus brought were not without skeptics in a struggling Caribbean country where employment has long been elusive. About 72 percent of the population earns less than $2 a day.

"It's impossible for a young entrepreneur to do social business in Haiti," said Stanley Pierre, 25, a student at the school. "It's not until the business is truly successful and we have taken care of families can we then turn around and help the community."

On Saturday, Yunus and his team planned to travel to Haiti's Central Plateau to visit an office run by Fonkoze, a microcredit bank, and Partners in Health, a nonprofit group that provides health care to the poor.

He said he wants to encourage health-related "social businesses" in the countryside.

Can Microsoft Salvage Windows Phone?

shutterstock_39324805When Microsoft launched Windows Phone last year, I was of the opinion that it was a platform that would never build steam. The entrenched players - iOS, RIM, and Android - already controlled the market, and the hiatus between the last Windows Mobile phone and the first Windows Phone was too long for even the most dedicated or curious customers to wait. It seems that this was uncharacteristically prescient as both Gartner and Horace Dediu both estimate that Microsoft sold 1.4 to 1.7 million Windows Phones this last quarter. As Gruber quips: "In other words, for that entire quarter, they sold about as many total Windows Phones as Apple sold iPhone 4S preorders last weekend."

Ohio Shale Drilling Permits Sky Rocket as Potential EPA Moratorium Looms (ContributorNetwork)

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) released shale drilling lease permit figures this week. The monitoring agency issued 45 Utica shale drilling permits this year. A distinct increase in permit requests and approvals occurred from July through September with 27 permits issued to unearth natural gas. Two Democrats from the Ohio House of Representatives authored a measure seeking to halt all hydraulic fracturing activity until the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can conduct a study on air and water quality safety concerns. Such a study is anticipated to take two years to complete.

My Ohio Twitter followers shared their thoughts on the increase in permits and possible moratorium via email and instant messaging.

* "Why would anyone think that a federal government study could be conducted in a timely manner? Ohio's permit and well drilling monitoring exceeds the EPA's own standards and inspection process. Fracking has been going on since the 1950s, there have been plenty of studies already. Drilling in Ohio will create jobs, safe jobs."-- Robert Walters, retired military, Sabina.

* "I support the drilling and the tax revenue which will occur in our region. If the EPA did not think Ohio monitored the process well or knew that hydraulic fracturing was not safe, we would not have gotten this far in the process. Even though some people are just now learning about the shale drilling and brine disposal process, it has been going on for decades. The EPA has had plenty of time to intercede." -- Cynthia Richards, nurse, Logan.

* "It is about time someone tried to reign in the shale boom and wild west attitude going on in Ohio. Thank you to the two Democrat ladies who are standing up to the status quo. Jobs are fine but destroying our water and natural resources in the process is not alright. The EPA needs time to study the results of fracking and Kasich should have to pay for an on-site federal monitor to come in and see what Ohio is doing." -- Larissa Monarch, Ohio University student, Athens.

* "There has been at least one active shale drilling project going on in Ohio since 2009. If the EPA and far left liberals were so concerned about dangers they have had plenty of time to visit, monitor and study the existing well. There have been no air or water quality issued from that natural gas project. The ODNR is more than capable of doing its job on a larger scale." -- Myrriah Thompson, small business owner, Marietta.

* "If the shale boom is only has as successful as anticipated, so many local communities will benefit from the tax revenue for underfunded levies, thousands of drilling related jobs and increased business at local stores. Governor Kasich is courting Toyota to Ohio, which will bring even more jobs. They will make cars which run on natural gas and convertors so we can use the far less expensive natural gas in our tanks. In rural areas we have to travel at least 30 miles to get to work or sometimes even the doctor or grocery store. I trust the guys at ODNR to do their jobs well."-- Ryan Walters, retired accountant, Creola.

Congress passes 3 free trade agreements (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Congress approved free trade agreements Wednesday with South Korea, Colombia and Panama, ending a four-year drought in the forming of new trade partnerships and giving the White House and Capitol Hill the opportunity to show they can work together to stimulate the economy and put people back to work.

In rapid succession, the House and Senate voted on the three trade pacts, which the administration says could boost exports by $13 billion and support tens of thousands of American jobs. None of the votes were close, despite opposition from labor groups and other critics of free trade agreements who say they result in job losses and ignore labor rights problems in the partner countries.

"We don't do much around here that's bipartisan these days," said Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who was U.S. Trade Representative during the George W. Bush administration. "This is an example of where we can come together as Republicans and Democrats realizing that with 14 million Americans out of work, we need to do things to move our economy forward."

President Barack Obama said passage of the agreements was "a major win for American workers and businesses."

"Tonight's vote, with bipartisan support, will significantly boost exports that bear the proud label `Made in America,' support tens of thousands of good-paying American jobs and protect labor rights, the environment and intellectual property. ... I look forward to signing these agreements."

The agreements would lower or eliminate tariffs that American exporters face in the three countries. They also take steps to better protect intellectual property and improve access for American investors in those countries. The last free trade agreement completed was with Peru in 2007.

The House also passed and sent to Obama for his signature a bill to extend aid to workers displaced by foreign competition. Obama had demanded that the worker aid bill be part of the trade package.

Years in the making, the votes come just a day after Senate Republicans were unified in rejecting Obama's $447 billion jobs creation initiative

The agreement with South Korea, the world's 13th largest economy, was the biggest such deal since the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada in 1994.

The votes were 278-151 for South Korea, 300-129 for Panama and 262-167 for Colombia. The Senate votes were 83-15 for Korea, 77-22 for Panama and 66-33 for Colombia.

Despite the strong majorities, the debate was not without rancor.

Republicans criticized Obama for taking several years to send the agreements, all signed in the President George W. Bush administration, to Congress for final approval. Many among Obama's core supporters, including organized labor and Democrats from areas hit hard by foreign competition, were unhappy that the White House was espousing the benefits of free trade.

Lori Wallach, director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch, said the "job-killing" agreements were a "complete flip-flop for President Obama, who won crucial swing states by pledging to overhaul our flawed trade policies."

In Cartagena, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said, "Today is a historic day for relations between Colombia and the United States." He added that the agreement with his country "is going to generate much well-being for our peoples."

But Tarsicio Mora, president of Colombia's CUT labor federation, said Colombia's economy was not ready to compete with the U.S.

"Our country isn't developed, it does not have the expertise much less the requirements for trade at this level," Mora said. "The country should be clear as to who is responsible for the coming massacre, because industry, large and small businesses are going to be hit because we are not in a condition to compete."

Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli said the trade agreement will help to attract foreign investment and increase commerce with the U.S., contributing to the creation of new jobs in the Central American country.

"We, Panamanians, have to prepare to take advantage of this agreement," Martinelli said in a statement.

Panama's Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture called it "a historic moment for Panama."

"This is a historic moment for Panama. A treaty with the largest trading partner in the world has been ratified and this will open the doors to a very important market," said chamber president Federico Humbert in a statement.

"We hope this agreement will bring great opportunities for Panama, while encouraging competitiveness and attract more foreign investment to our country," Humbert said.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said that before taking up free trade agreements the House should be considering legislation passed by the Senate on Tuesday that would punish China for keeping its currency undervalued, a practice that makes its exports cheaper and contributes to China's huge trade surplus with the United States. House GOP leaders oppose the currency bill and a Democratic attempt to attach it to the Colombia agreement was rejected.

Democratic opposition was particularly strong against the agreement with Colombia, where labor leaders long have faced the threat of violence.

"I find it deeply disturbing that the United States Congress is even considering a free trade agreement with a country that holds the world record for assassinations of trade unionists," said Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif.

To address Democratic objections to the deals, the White House demanded linking the trade bills to extension of a Kennedy-era program that helps workers displaced by foreign competition with retraining and financial aid. The Senate went along; the House passed it Wednesday, 307-122.

But with the focus in both the White House and Congress on jobs, the trade agreements enjoyed wide bipartisan support.

The administration says the three deals will boost U.S. exports by $13 billion a year and that just the agreement with South Korea, America's seventh largest trading partner, will support 70,000 American jobs.

Supporters say the three trading partners already enjoy almost duty-free access to U.S. markets and the agreements will lower tariffs on U.S. goods, making them significantly more competitive.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce notes that U.S. farm products sold to South Korea face 54 percent tariffs, compared with 9 percent for Korean agricultural goods in the United States, and that U.S. automakers are hit with a 35 percent tariff in Colombia, compared with 2 percent for any vehicles coming from Colombia.

The administration says the trade deal with South Korea could increase exports by $10 billion, enough to eliminate the current $10 billion surplus Seoul has with the United States. It would make 95 percent of American consumer and industrial goods duty free within five years.

The vote came a day before Korean President Lee Myung-bak is to address a joint meeting of Congress. On Wednesday he said in a speech at the Chamber of Congress that the agreement would "send a powerful message to the world that the United States and South Korea stand together in rejecting protectionism and that we are open to free and fair trade."

Republicans welcomed the prospect of increased exports but said those benefits could have come sooner if Obama had acted more quickly. They said American businesses have paid $3.8 billion in tariffs to Colombia since the trade agreement was signed, and that Americans are losing markets in South Korea because of a Korea-European Union free trade agreement that went into effect in July.

In the past year the administration has succeeded in winning concessions from South Korea to open up its markets further to U.S. vehicles and concluded an agreement to bring transparency to banking practices in Panama, known as a tax haven.

It has prodded Colombia into putting together a plan designed to protect labor rights and crack down on violence against labor leaders.

The United States has free trade relations with 17 nations. It could still take several months to work out the final formalities before the current agreements go into force. The South Korean parliament is expected to sign off on its agreement this month.
