Sanchez, Tigers beat Yanks for 2-0 lead in ALCS

NEW YORK (AP) ? Anibal Sanchez and the Detroit Tigers made the plays, got a favorable call from an umpire and took advantage of their few chances at the plate.

The reward: a commanding lead in the AL championship series, and a trip home with their ace ready to start.

Sanchez shut down a Yankees lineup minus injured Derek Jeter, and Detroit won without any drama, beating New York 3-0 Sunday for a 2-0 cushion.

Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda pitched perfect ball into the sixth inning. But the slumping New York hitters looked lost a day after their captain broke his ankle in the 12th inning of a 6-4 loss.

Making his second postseason start, Sanchez pitched three-hit ball deep into the game to make Tigers manager Jim Leyland's handling of a bullpen without struggling closer Jose Valverde a lot easier.

The Tigers scored twice in the eighth after second base umpire Jeff Nelson missed a call on a two-out tag at second base. Yankees manager Joe Girardi argued, and was ejected on his 48th birthday.

Game 3 in the best-of-seven series is Tuesday night in Detroit, with reigning AL MVP Justin Verlander starting for the Tigers against Phil Hughes. Verlander went 2-0 in the division series versus Oakland, including a four-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in the decisive Game 5.

The Tigers led 1-0 in the eighth and had Omar Infante on first with two outs. Austin Jackson singled and when Infante took a wide turn at second, right fielder Nick Swisher threw behind him.

Robinson Cano made a swipe tag as Infante made a head-first dive back to second. Cano missed Infante's arm but brushed his body, replays clearly showed. But Nelson called Infante safe.

Cano and Girardi pleaded the call to no avail. Boone Logan replaced Kuroda and gave up an RBI single to pinch hitter Avisail Garcia to make it 2-0.

Girardi returned to lift Logan for Joba Chamberlain, and then he remained on the field to resume the argument. Red-faced with neck muscles bulging, Girardi could be seen shouting at Nelson, "You were right there. How could you miss it?" He was tossed by Nelson for his first postseason ejection.

Miguel Cabrera added a run-scoring single in the inning.

Government: What does God have to do with it?

A Christian Science perspective.

By Caryl Emra Farkas / October 15, 2012

The Gospels don?t record Jesus talking politics. The closest he came to it was in the temple when the chief priests and scribes tried to have him arrested by Roman soldiers. They asked him, ?Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?? He replied, ?[B]ring me a penny.... And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar?s. And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar?s, and to God the things that are God?s? (Mark 12:14-17).

The election season is an exciting time, filled with hopes and hypotheses about what an individual or a party can do to make life better for the country. The excitement isn?t entirely positive; we worry about what people from the ?other? party may do should they get into office, and we hope that ?our? candidate will keep his or her promises and fix things that we think are wrong with government. In this time of debate and media inundation of different points of view, it?s easy to lose sight of God. What are the things that belong to God when it comes to politics and government?

I find an answer to that question in this statement from Monitor founder Mary Baker Eddy: ?One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, ?Love thy neighbor as thyself;? annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry, ? whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 340). In other words, the entire process of government rightfully belongs to God.

Like Christ Jesus, Mrs. Eddy attributed all real power to God, and suggested that unless we begin our reckonings from the standpoint of God?s omnipotence and consistent presence, we can?t reach meaningful and realistic conclusions.

It looks very much as if government is run by groups and individuals with varying degrees of goodness ? as if our own good depends on the vagaries of human personalities. Looking around at all the evidence to support that view, we may accept the notion that everything belongs to ?Caesar.? Yet, the First Commandment urges us to think differently. In effect, it says, Don?t let anything you encounter be bigger to you than God.

When we practice First-Commandment thinking, we find that lesser claims to power tend to fall away before the more solid fact of divine Principle. As it turns out, divine Love actually is the biggest and most authoritative force in human life, and that is true for us all, regardless of politics. The first words of the Lord?s Prayer go to the heart of the spiritual sense of government: ?Our Father.?

What is best and most real in all of us is our shared inseparable connection to God, good. We can experience not only the aspiration of those words, but we can be moved by their inspiration to let government begin with our own real and valuable spiritual sense. As with a pebble dropped into a pond, the ripples will head outward, blessing all they touch.

New USDA Nutrition Guidelines Could Help Children Reclaim Their ...

From The Huffington Post?..

Like many families across the country, mine struggles with obesity and related illnesses such as Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. The situation has been so bad that both my grandmother and aunt died relatively young due to heart attacks. My mother has already been diagnosed with type II diabetes and I have a teenage cousin who weighs 300 pounds ? a health risk flagged by his doctor.

Sadly, our family is not alone. It is estimated that close to 40 percent of Latino children are overweight or obese, putting them at higher risk of developing chronic diseases and being overweight or obese as adults and developing other complications, according to the U.S. Surgeon General. It is such an issue in our community that in a survey by the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children?s Hospital, Latino parents listed obesity (44 percent) over lack of exercise (38 percent) and drug abuse (38 percent) as the biggest health concern facing children.

The subject of obesity shouldn?t be taboo. We need to talk about its causes and what we can do as a society to address it because it is killing us. An example of a way to take action is regulating easy access to cheap junk food at schools. This is a vital step that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has taken by making healthy foods a priority for school meals.

In 2010, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act was enacted to provide healthier foods and beverages in schools. The law charged the USDA with updating nutrition standards for the National School Breakfast and National School Lunch programs. Hence, starting this fall, kids began to see more whole grains, fruits and vegetables in their school cafeterias. For example, a typical lunch is whole grain spaghetti with meat sauce, broccoli, fat-free or low-fat milk and kiwi. Another day, they may have a chef salad, whole wheat pretzel, cooked corn, baby carrots, low-fat dressing, bananas and fat-free or low-fat milk. It is an amazing improvement in school meals to protect our children?s health.

Access to healthy foods in our schools make a world of difference in the lives of our children. A study by the research and policy group Bridging the Gap found that overweight or obese 5th graders who lived in states with laws that restrict the sale of unhealthy snacks and beverages in schools are less likely to remain overweight or obese by the 8th grade compared to their peers in states without these laws.

Seven Cherubs: home inspiration: creating zones in your home

One of my favourite ways to keep my home organised is by creating zones with a specific purpose or theme. I find allocating a certain area or space in my home to cater to our needs in this way, not only keeps my home more organised but helps our whole family know exactly where an item should go or where to find a specific item. This therefore saves me time putting stuff away and answering questions of where things are placed.

When talking about zones, I am not talking about rooms in your home. I know a bedroom is a sleeping zone, the kitchen is the food zone and the laundry is the clothes washing zone. I am talking about establishing zones or area's for a specific purpose within those rooms.?

How to create a zone

To achieve this I first had to look at the habits and actions of our family. What did we spend the most time doing and what possessions in our home did we love and use the most? As a family we love to watch DVD's, craft, read books, listen and dance to music, play on the Wii, swim and play with certain toys, like lego.

After spending time assessing what my children are drawn to the most in our home, I then established zones within certain rooms to cater to those needs. As my children love to craft, I created a craft area that was easy for them to use and create with. As my children love to read books, I created a children's book section that was easy for them to access. Doing this has made a real improvement on how organised my home is and created less mess for me to clean up with a large family.

I also worked hard on keeping the zone area's simple looking and child friendly. I use storage products such as shelves, baskets and containers to help create order and to make sure they are functional for everyone in our family to use. I have a very practical theme in our home and with so many young children it has been a real necessity.?

Examples of zones

Here are some examples of zones we have around our home:

The DVD Zone. They are all stored in one place in our home. Yes, I have quite a few DVD's.?It is cheaper as a family of nine to buy a DVD than go to the movies. I also acquired quite a few DVD's when I was doing movie reviews here on my blog :)

The Wii remote zone. One thing that drives me crazy is coming into our rumpus room and finding all the Wii remotes scattered all over the floor. They are really an expensive item to replace and I like to keep them in good condition, so I created a basket for all Wii related products to be stored. It has been working well for us so far!

I personally love children's books and to help my children read them more I rearranged our book shelves so that all of the children's books were grouped together in one place on our shelves. I also made sure they were organised by height order. The younger children's books are down lower so they can reach them and the older children's books {which are not shown in this picture} are placed up higher for them to reach.?

For our craft zone I have a large basket placed next to our kitchen table full of craft supplies. This is where I keep newspapers, egg cartons, cereal boxes, buttons, ribbons, scrap coloured paper, material and other fun craft supplies for my children to use. They can get supplies out of the basket and get creative on our kitchen table any time they like {except when we are having dinner of course!} and can easily put the supplies back in the basket when they have finished.?

Our music zone. This is the state that it normally looks in. Flute and music scattered everywhere. I keep music stands and other musical instruments in the corner next to the piano and my children know this is where the music practice happens. They often get together here to have fun bashing out tunes.?

As my children love to colour in we have a colouring in zone. In our rumpus room we have a small desk dedicated to colouring in. There are some books to chose from, paper underneath the desk for drawing and a designated basket for pencils and another one for crayons and markers.?

As we are a large family, I find that for my children it can be hard to feel like they have their own space and personal area or zone. So for each of my children I gave them a special personal zone. Here is an example of Liberty's zone. She has her own shelf on the wall in her room. It is her shelf to decorate however she likes. Everyone knows it is her stuff and her zone. She can change it whenever she likes and I try not to influence what she places on there.?

Benefits of creating zones

I have found creating zones in our home allows our children to easily know where to go to have fun. In our craft zone they know where to find supplies, where they can spread themselves out to create and where to place items when they are finished. It stops the craft activities spreading to the lounge room, the bedrooms and other rooms in the house therefore leaving less mess and stress for me when I am trying to keep track of many kids with a large family.?

At different times and seasons of your family life, zones will need to change and even rotate. For example, I established a doll house zone for several months in my lounge room for my children and after that excitement wore off I replaced it with a lego zone. After that excitement wore off I replaced it with a My Little Pet Shop zone and so forth. I rotate certain toy zones to allow my children to play and use toys that we own and give them the freedom to spread toys out and even leave them there overnight or several days if need be.?

Often when I establish zones like this for a short time, the whole family get's involved and plays with them. It is wonderful to watch all of my children playing together and helping each other be creative in such a way. This to me is what creating zones in your home is all about. Helping to bring your family together by having fun and to find more joy and happiness as a family.
