Fatal shooting mars Venezuela election campaign

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Jason Valero was so excited about the possibility that Henrique Capriles could unseat President Hugo Chavez that he took a few weeks off from his job as a dump truck driver to work on the opposition presidential candidate's campaign.

Valero also planned to volunteer during the Oct. 7 election at a polling station. On Saturday, he joined a campaign caravan in his native rural state of Barinas, driving his Mitsubishi Montero with his wife and 15-year-old daughter.

Chavez supporters blocked the road in the western state, and Valero and others got out of their cars in an attempt to persuade the protesters to let them pass.

Suddenly, gunshots rang out and Valero was bleeding on the pavement.

Valero's younger brother, Ramon, riding in another car, rushed to his side. Jason Valero later died, one of two Capriles supporters slain in a shooting that has inflamed tensions ahead of Venezuela's presidential election on Sunday.

"He died fighting for a change," Ramon Valero told The Associated Press on Monday in a phone interview from Barinas, while the family prepared for the funeral.

One suspect has been arrested in the killings, Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said on Sunday. His name has not been released.

Another opposition supporter, Omar Fernandez, was shot in the neck and later died at a hospital. A third man was hospitalized with serious wounds, opposition politician Pedro Castillo said.

El Aissami had described the violence as a "confrontation," but opposition supporters denied that, saying they were simply attacked. A video posted on YouTube, which circulated in Venezuelan media, showed the two groups arguing in the street, and then people scattering as shots rang out.

At a rally in Caracas on Sunday, Capriles condemned the violence. Chavez also called for calm, saying: "It's not with violence that we're going to face each other. It's vote against vote."

"Justice should be done," Valero's 24-year-old brother said. He recalled playing baseball and in the rivers of Barinas with his elder sibling when they were children.

Jason Valero, an athletic man who wore a goatee, was a car aficionado and until recently his pride and joy was a 1969 Mustang with red flames painted on the front. Before selling the car, Valero posed with it in a photo that he posted on his Facebook page, wearing sunglasses and smiling.

Valero had been working in Caracas driving his truck but returned to his home state in the past month to help with the Capriles campaign, his brother said. Their father is also active in the party Primero Justicia, or Justice First, and has been a candidate for local mayor.

Recently, Valero's brother said they had been talking hopefully about the future. Valero told him "that he had come back to dedicate himself 100 percent to politics, to see if we can get out of this," the brother said, referring to Chavez's nearly 14 years as president.

Google's World Wide Web Wars

Google's World Wide Web Wars

We?ve all grown up on the Internet and have been used to Google being a big part of that experience. Many of us remember Google as the rebellious startup, gradually becoming the dominate force in the search world, but what has Google really become in its 14 year existence?

The argument will rumble on, but Google's claim to be just another search engine is starting to seem increasingly unconvincing. Fourteen years after its winningly spare and restrained home page entered our lives, its dominance of search is close to total.

PHOTOS: Kristin Cavallari Shows Off Her Post-Baby Body

The Mothers: Susie, Milo and Bibi

Name:

Susie? Children: Milo (nearly 5) and Isobel, also known as Bibi, 18 months.

Location:

Chorlton, Manchester

Expectations of Motherhood:

?With my eldest, Milo, I had none. I think because of that, I actually found becoming a mother the most incredible and empowering experience. Here was something I could do and it felt that I could do it "right"; I trusted my instincts. Second time round, I did have an expectation. I expected it to be hard, sure, but I thought I'd be able to do it all again, that having my daughter would just add to my love and my abilities as a mother.

Reality of Motherhood:

?Having Bibi has been one of the hardest things I've ever done. I say that as a mother who is totally and utterly devoted to her daughter, who loves the bones of her, who can't be away from her without experiencing a phyiscal pull. I miss my kids when they are not physically here with me. But oh, Bibi was a hard baby. She didn't sleep, day or night, for the first ten months. She was so angry and cross; I'd regularly be in tears at 9am, thinking, how the hell am I going to manage the rest of the day on my own with her? I was so tired. I missed hanging out with just me and Milo. And the most shocking thing of all: I didn't think it would be like this. I expected to fall in love with her in the same way I had with Milo; but that rush of immediate first love was a long time coming. Don't get me wrong, I would have wrestled a tiger (and quite possibly won) for her, but she was hard to love.

I remember crying on the tram, in front of all these people, when she just wouldn't stop crying, and she'd been crying for something like 48 hours straight. I'd tried to pick her up to comfort her but she just fought me off - that was what was so hard. Not that she cried, but that she was so angry with it. She didn't want comfort. Poor Milo was there on the tram, one of my poor neighbours too (who to her credit, did offer to help). I didn't want help, though, because I knew that whatever break I had, whether it was 5 minutes or 5 hours, I'd have to go back to having her scream at me, unrelentingly, day and night.

The turning point came that day; I realised I couldn't go on. My lovely husband stepped in and took over the nights and, eventually, after a further few months, Bibi started sleeping. That, coupled with her also being able to walk and to be able to communicate, was the turning point. I think Bibi just didn't like being a baby. By 12 months she was a changed girl. She has become the most wonderful, good-natured, hilarious, feisty and slightly bonkers toddler. I am in awe of her, I am in love with her. And finally I have bonded with her.

So when she was born I lost all the confidence I had in being a good mother. I don't think I was, for a long time. It's something I actually feel very ashamed about. I "should" have been better. And part of the reason for doing this project is to out myself, to say, you know what, I failed, to begin with. But I found a way back. And to say sorry to my darling girl - because, you know what, for all she drove me half way to insanity, I wouldn't have had it any other way. I would do it all again, just to have her in my life. Only I'd hope I'd be able to be slightly less crap if I did it again.

So - Bibi, if you ever read this: I love you. You are wonderful. And if anyone ever makes you feel otherwise (including me), you have my full permission to have words with them. And not necessarily nice words, either.

Taking your children home for the first time:?I don't want to be a Chorlton cliche, but I had Bibi at home. It was less about being an 'earth mother' (I'm really not) but more about practicalities. Milo was asleep, I was 5 mins from hospital if anything went wrong (and quite possibly had better care than I would in hospital; I had 2 Grade 7 midwives with me throughout), and I just wanted to be left alone to get on with it. So afterwards, my midwife ran me a bath, made my bed, and I got in and snuggled up with my new girl. Five minutes later, Milo woke up and, still in his PJs, met his baby sister. That bit - giving him the best present ever - that made it all worth it. Milo and Bibi are very close; they adore each other, and I hope that their relationship started that morning when he climbed into bed: me, Simon, Milo and Bibi, all together.

The best/worst advice:?I made a point early on not to listen to anything other than medical advice. Babies are people; people are unique. So why would you try and apply a 'one size fits all' approach to your own child?

The hardest part of being a mother:?The lack of time.

The best parts of being a mother:?Having two people in my life who constantly amaze me, who make me laugh, who remind me what fun means, who teach me how to be a better, less selfish person. Honestly, my kids rock: hanging out with them is a privilege.

Hopes for your family:?That Milo and Bibi will be happy and healthy, meet people in their lives who make them feel good about themselves, and that they both grow up knowing, at the core of them, that they are OK just as they are. They don't have to 'be' anything to be good enough; they just have to be.

What advice would you offer to new and expectant mums:?Be kind to yourself. And take help when it is offered, and ask for it if it isn't.

Personal Trainer Redondo Beach Tips - Health & Fitness Article ...

Before we actually talk about the information, it is essential to highlight the value of always speaking with a skilled Redondo Beach Personal Trainer before you believe something that another individual reveals about working out. There are many flaws that are made, several even by great sports athletes. The personal instructor always aware of what is most reliable as a part of his role is being updated with all the adjustments that occurred in the trade and supporting the customers.

Resistance Training Does Not Get You Ripped Alone

Some individuals previously discovered the truth that strength training will lose the most fat possible but this does not imply that you can just workout really hard and you?ll find yourself with 6 pack abs. The reality would be that your food consumption is the most important aspect of getting toned and not just your regular workout. Strength training really is the best choice in case you need to reduce weight as quickly as possible but the personal trainer in Redondo Beach will certainly offer you a nutrition routine that you have to follow.

Working Out Is Not About Quantity

Sad to say there are countless of people that basically exercise a lot. More workout is not always much better than less. The fact is that you need to train as much as it is required because too much work could result in the production of excessive cortisol. That is known as the stress hormone and this will literally break your body down. Every single resistance training routine that?s created by a personal trainer in Redondo Beach may last below 60 minutes with forty five minutes as the highest for almost all routines. It is always best to put an emphasis on excellence instead of amount and this is absolutely true for anything in life.

Age Is Not a Component That Determines Whether Or Not You Should Train

How often have you heard people expressing that they are too old to train? This is definitely not true and you could in fact exercise even if you are 90 if your system permits you to. In fact, working out has been proven to be really good for people that are older. Then again, as we grow older, there are limitations that appear. It?s important to talk with a personal trainer from Redondo Beach to be able to properly exercise and to get a routine that?s right for you.

Do not Blindly Trust Bodybuilders!

Individuals tend to believe something that a muscle builder tells them. This is such a negative approach due to the fact that those individuals are not always the best ones that you could talk to. A bodybuilder has a specific exercise method that?s working for him but might not be suitable in your situation. Only believe in what the Personal Trainer Redondo Beach is advising you because this qualified professional will take into consideration your system and your demands. The body builders tend to suggest training based on what is good for them and not for you.

Connecticut man shoots burglar dead, turns out to be own son

(Reuters) - A Connecticut man responding to his sister's call for help during an apparent burglary at her home next door, shot and killed a masked intruder who turned out to be his own teenage son, state police said on Friday.

Tyler Giuliano, 15, was wearing a ski mask and appeared to be armed when he was shot on Thursday by his father, who authorities declined to identify, said Lieutenant J. Paul Vance, a spokesman for the Connecticut State Police.

The father's sister, who lives next door, was home alone before 1 a.m. when she called him to report someone trying to break into her home. The father went over to investigate and was approached by a masked person dressed entirely in black and holding a shiny object, police said in a statement.

"Believing the suspect was armed with a weapon and about to attack him, the (father) discharged his personal handgun at the suspect," police said in the statement.

Giuliano was pronounced dead at the scene.

"(He) was lying on the ground in the driveway with obvious gunshot injuries, holding a weapon," the statement said.

Vance declined to further describe the weapon.

Authorities seized the father's gun, were investigating whether it is registered and will consult with the state's attorney to determine if any charges will be filed, Vance said.

Police also were investigating why the teen, who has no criminal history, was outside his aunt's home.

"We truly don't know. We'll look at the family dynamics, (his) school locker, cell phone, computer to figure out what's going on," Vance said.

ACLU Asks Supreme Court to Invalidate Gene Patents ...

By Sam Favate

The American Civil Liberties Union, along with the Public Patent Foundation, again asked the Supreme Court to invalidate patents for two genes that are associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, saying the patents restrict scientific research and access to medical care.

A 2010 ruling from a New York?federal district court invalidated all of the challenged patents, which are held by Myriad Genetics Inc . and the University of Utah Research Foundation. In July 2011, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said companies can obtain patents?on genes, but not the methods for comparing gene sequences.

Earlier this year, in March, the Supreme Court vacated the appeals court?s ruling and instructed that the case be reconsidered in light of its ruling in?Mayo Collaborative Services v. Prometheus Laboratories, which invalidated patents on methods for evaluating a patient?s response to a drug.?In response,?the appeals court ruled last month that companies can obtain patents on the genes.

?In our view, the court of appeals did not fully consider or correctly apply the Supreme Court?s most recent and relevant patent law decisions,? said Chris Hansen, a staff attorney with the ACLU Speech, Privacy and Technology Project. ?DNA occurs naturally in the human body and cannot be patented by a single company that can then use its patents to limit scientific research and the free exchange of ideas.?

The patents give Myriad the exclusive right to perform tests on the two genes in question. Women with some genetic mutations are believed to have up to an 85% chance of developing breast cancer and a 50% risk for ovarian cancer, according to Sandra Park of the ACLU Women?s Rights Project, in a blog posting. The patents essentially mean that laboratories around the country can?t provide genetic testing of those genes without permission of the patent holders.

The Supreme Court is likely to give Myriad a chance to respond before making a decision on whether to hear the case. Owners of patents have in the past said that research efforts could be hampered without legal protection for the work that went into discovering the genes, the Baltimore Sun noted.

?There?s a real crying need for clarification about patent law and intellectual property related to genomics,? Jeffrey Kahn, professor of bioethics and public policy at Johns Hopkins University, told the Sun.

A spokeswoman for Myriad wasn?t immediately available for comment.

Nancy Tellem at Microsoft? The inside dirt on whether she can succeed

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - CBS veteran Nancy Tellem's leap to Microsoft, where she will head up entertainment content, was more like an inching, tortoise-like crawl, individuals close to the situation told TheWrap.

Negotiations have been dragging on for most of this year, and I'm told reliably that the press release for her to be president of entertainment and digital media, which went out on Monday, was first prepared back in July.

Why the slow-go? Apparently Tellem was not sure she wanted the gig, and Microsoft was forever recalibrating its own excitement about a content-creating strategy.

The lack of enthusiasm on both sides may not bode well for Tellem's new tenure at a Redmond, Wash.-based technology company, with its very different culture from the hard-charging, fast-lane broadcast world of CBS.

"She will not be cranking out shows in prime time," one person familiar with her new role told TheWrap. "This is a software and device company. This is not a job aching to be filled."

Tellem did not respond to an email seeking comment, and a Microsoft spokesman said she was not immediately available for interview.

Tellem's role, reporting to Microsoft Studios Vice President Phil Spencer, will be to create content under the umbrella of the game division at Microsoft, the "creative" sector of the company.

Buried in Monday's release is the key distinction that she is tasked with making interactive narrative content that will be able to use new technology that actively involves the viewer over Xbox, like the Kinect.

"I look forward to building a studio team that embraces the challenges of creating true interactive content that the Xbox platform supports and to work with talent to create content that will change the way entertainment content is experienced and delivered," she said.

Yet this technology is still very unproven, and as one insider put it, there is no evidence yet that consumers will line up to interact with their dramas or comedy series.

It seems that hiring Tellem was the priority of Don Mattrick, president of interactive entertainment business at Microsoft. The technology giant has taken a beating in the PR world this year with the crushing dominance of Apple, the fast moves of Amazon and the perception that under CEO Steve Ballmer the company has lost its edge.

It certainly makes sense for Microsoft to think about making content. Xbox is one of the largest distribution systems for content of all kinds - games, movies and television.

But it's not clear that Microsoft knew what they were hiring in Tellem; she is a top-notch business executive, capable of leading a dynamic and fast-moving television organization. She ran the network, as well as overseeing cbs.com. But she came up through business affairs, not programming.

And it seems that Microsoft doesn't have a real strategic mission for Tellem to embrace. "They're looking to her to figure that out," says the individual with knowledge of her new role.

If she fails, Microsoft's culture is not exactly a forgiving one. (I refer you to the description in Vanity Fair of a brutal review process that has driven many talented executives out of the company.) Company insiders suggest she has about two years to deliver - whatever it is they decide she needs to deliver.

Either she's bring her magic touch from her years at CBS or she'll flame out. In any event, said the individual, "She's got a couple of years."
