Dennis Rodman must pay $500K in child support

(AP) ? Former NBA star Dennis Rodman has been found in contempt of court and ordered to pay $500,000 in back child support to his ex-wife, her attorney said Thursday.

The flamboyant basketball player known for his off-court antics was sentenced to informal probation, his ex-wife's attorney, Mary Ann Noiroux, told City News Service. Orange County Superior Court Commissioner Barry Michaelson warned Rodman could face jail time if he doesn't pay the child support, she said.

Rodman's attorney, Linnea Willis, didn't return an email from The Associated Press and a phone number did not take messages.

Another attorney for Rodman's ex-wife argued in court that Rodman owed his ex-wife, Michelle Rodman, about $850,000, but Linnea Willis, the former NBA standout's attorney, challenged that figure, Noiroux said.

The two sides met outside court and agreed to $500,000, which Michaelson approved, Noiroux said.

Dennis and Michelle Rodman must still work out custody and visitation for their two pre-teen children: a son and a daughter.

A trial is set for Jan. 24 on those issues, but the two hope to work out an agreement before the court date, Noiroux said.

This isn't the first time Dennis Rodman has been found in contempt.

Rodman, recognizable by his facial piercings and his hair that's died in brilliant colors, was ordered to perform 104 hours of community service in May after being found guilty of four counts of contempt for failure to pay child support for 2009 and 2010. He is completing that work in Florida, where he lives.

The legal battle between Rodman and his former spouse began in 2004, when Michelle Rodman filed for divorce.

Dennis Rodman was a bad-boy star of the Detroit Pistons and won three NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame last year.

The eccentric athlete who once dated Madonna and was briefly married to Carmen Electra lived in California's Orange County before moving to Florida.

He frequently attracted the attention of police with loud parties at his Newport Beach residence.

Apple hires ex-Microsoft hacker to beef up operating system security

When Apple (AAPL) needs talent, it knows exactly where to look first: the sea of hackers. Kristin Paget, a former Microsoft (MSFT) hacker now officially works for Apple, reports Wired. Paget, now a core operating system security researcher at Apple, was once responsible for discovering bugs in Windows Vista before Microsoft shipped it in 2007. Paget helped prevent ?a lot of bugs from shipping on Vista? and we kid you not, was awarded with a T-shirt signed by Microsoft Vice President of Windows Development Brian Valentine that read: ?I delayed Windows Vista.??Wired?writes?Paget?s Vista bugs literally saved the OS from being a complete disaster.?

As Macs become more popular, the once ?virus-free? computers are becoming more and more vulnerable to attacks and malware. And given the rampant amount of circumvention on iOS, who better to hire than a hacker who enjoys searching for security flaws?

It?s not clear if Paget is working on beefing up security on OS X, iOS, or both, but either way we wouldn?t be surprised if you find future Apple devices more difficult to jailbreak and crack.

We hope for Paget?s sake, she gets more than just a T-shirt this time.

Italy vandals destroy 62,000 bottles of vintage wine

ROME (Reuters) - Lovers of exquisite wine wherever you are, if you have tears, prepare to shed them now.

Vandals have destroyed more than 62,000 bottles worth of choice Brunello di Montalcino of the exclusive Soldera label at the Case Basse vineyard and estate in Tuscany.

In what the owners have branded as an act of Mafia-style intimidation, the vandals opened the spigots of 10 huge barrels of the produce of the last six years and let the wine go down the drain - literally.

They broke into the estate on Sunday night and when workers walked into the cantina on Monday morning they found nothing left of six years work but puddles of red liquid on the floor.

The total amount lost, according to a Soldera family statement, was 62,600 litres (16,400 gallons)

And this was no surplus supermarket stuff either - a bottle of Soldera starts about 110 euros (87 pounds) and all of them, of course, are numbered as if they were gold bars.

The whole episode has left the Soldera family scratching their heads over a vintage whodunnit.

"I have never received any threats. I have absolutely no idea why this happened or who could have done it," winery founder Gianfranco Soldera, 75, told Reuters by telephone from the hilly estate on Wednesday morning.

"This is beyond me. I can't get into the minds of the people who did this but I guess if someone plans to intimidate me it has to start somehow," he said.

The 23-hectare (56-acre) estate at Montalcino uses Sangiovese Grosso vines to produce the famous wine.

Soldera, a former insurance broker from Milan, and his wife Graziella, started the estate in 1972 when they bought land Tuscan sharecroppers had abandoned.

Soldera runs the estate with his wife, his two children, his grandchildren and about 15 full-time employees. About half the produce is sent abroad, about 10 percent to the United States.

"We will carry on," Soldera said. "We have passion for this land and its produce and no amount of intimidation can stop us."

The family said in a statement that the gesture would "reverberate beyond the boundaries of our winery".

Indeed, the residents of the normally tranquil area dotted with small, centuries-old, hilltop towns were shocked.

Montalcino's mayor Silvio Franceschelli called the crime "infamous and cowardly".

Fabrizio Bindocci, President of the trade consortium that groups some 250 Brunello producers, said the attack "hits all of us".

(NASDAQ: Z), if they purchased the Company's common stock during the period between February 15, 2012 and November 6, 2012, inclusive (the "Class Period"). This action is pending in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington.

What You May Do

About the Lawsuit

Zillow and certain of its senior executives are charged with issuing a series of materially false and misleading statements, during the Class Period, in violation of federal securities laws.

On November 6, 2012, Zillow shares collapsed $6.22 per share, to close at $28.15 per share, after the Company belatedly disclosed weak third quarter 2012 earnings and after the Company reduced fourth quarter and full year 2012 revenue guidance. During the class period, while Zillow's stock price was artificially inflated, Company insiders sold 3.1 million shares of their own Zillow stock for proceeds of nearly $115 million. The Company also was able to raise $156 million through a September 2012 offering -- just weeks before the end of the Class Period.

Nigeria: Death Stalking Lead-Poisoned Children | Human Rights ...

(Abuja) ? The Nigerian government?s failure to produce promised funding to address the worst lead poisoning outbreak in modern history is leaving thousands of children to die or face lifelong disability, the Nigerian Youth Climate Action Network (NYCAN) and Human Rights Watch said today. The organizations opened a social media campaign on December 6, 2012, urging people to post comments to President Goodluck Jonathan?s official Facebook page, asking him why he has broken his promise to release funding for the cleanup of lead-contaminated areas in Zamfara State.

?More than 400 children in Zamfara State have died from lead poisoning according to official estimates,? said Babatunde Olugboji, deputy program director at Human Rights Watch. ?Unless the promised funds are released immediately, cleanup of the contaminated areas won?t be able to start until after next year?s rainy season, leaving thousands more children at risk of death and permanent disability.?

In May, the government pledged close to US$5 million to clean up areas that had been contaminated with lead during artisanal gold mining operations because of high levels of lead in rock ore. The funds were also to be used to put safe mining practices into effect, such as introducing processing equipment that reduces the risks of lead exposure.

In the village of Bagega, the most seriously contaminated town in the area, since Human Rights Watch researchers last visited in May, the family featured in a Human Rights Watch video that had already lost 10 children to lead poisoning, has seen another child die from lead poisoning.

?

?

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), an independent international organization for medical humanitarian aid that has provided life-saving treatment to more than 2,000 children in Zamfara, cannot treat the thousands of children who remain in urgent need until environmental cleanup has been completed because treating children when they are still actively exposed to lead makes their bodies more susceptible to the harms of lead poisoning.

Over the last three years, TerraGraphics, a US-based company, has worked with local Nigerian staff to clean up seven villages in Zamfara and has provided initial support to clean up Bagega, which has about 8,000 residents. The environmental cleanup of Bagega, which will only happen if President Jonathan releases the promised funds, must begin by mid-January to ensure it can be completed before the rainy season begins.

?If President Jonathan does not release these funds right away, children in Bagega will be forced to continue living in poisoned homes,? said Hamzat Lawal, co-founder of NYCAN and a technical adviser to the group. ?Children in Bagega are dying. If we wait another year to clean up the conditions that are poisoning these children, more children will die or become permanently disabled.?

Lawal is also national coordinator of African Youth Initiative on Climate Change ? Nigeria (AYICC-Nigeria) and is overseeing the Follow The Money (www.followthemoneyng.org) campaign to ensure transparency and accountability for any funding released for the cleanup of Bagega.

Artisanal gold mines are found throughout Zamfara State. High levels of lead in the earth and the use of rudimentary mining methods have resulted in an ongoing epidemic of lead poisoning among children. Children are particularly susceptible to the harm caused by lead, and high levels of lead exposure can cause brain, liver, kidney, nerve, and stomach damage, as well as permanent intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Research by Human Rights Watch in Zamfara in late 2011 found that children are exposed to lead when they process ore in the mines, when their miner relatives return home covered with lead dust, and when the lead-filled ore is manually or mechanically crushed at home. Children can also be exposed to toxic lead in contaminated water and food.

?We have reached a crisis point in Zamfara,? Olugboji said. ?Thousands of children live in a toxic environment and are in urgent need of treatment. President Jonathan needs to make good on his promise and release the promised funds before the window of opportunity before the rainy season closes. But he needs to act right away.?

People who want to join the campaign asking President Jonathan to release the funds can visit his Facebook page and comment on his last status update with the following message:

?

President Jonathan, why won't you release the money you promised in May to clean up poisonous lead in?Zamfara? Children are dying and your?government?s failure to act is putting more children at risk.

Indian village bans mobile phone use by women

PATNA, India - (Reuters) - A village council in the eastern Indian state of Bihar has banned the use of mobile phones by women, saying the phones were "debasing the social atmosphere" by leading to elopements - a move that set off outraged protests from activists.

In addition to the ban, the Sunderbari village council in a Muslim-dominated area some 385 kilometers (239 miles) east of Patna, the capital of Bihar, has also imposed a fine of 10,000 rupees ($180) if a girl is caught using a mobile phone on the streets.

Married women would have to pay 2,000 rupees ($36.60).

"It always gives us a lot of embarrassment when someone asks who has eloped this time,"? said Manuwar Alam, who heads a newly-formed committee tasked with enforcing the ban, referring to queries from neighboring villages.

He said the number of elopements and extramarital love affairs had risen in the past few months, with at least six girls and women fleeing their homes.

"Even married women were deserting their husbands to elope with lovers. That was shameful for us," Alam said. "So, we decided to tackle it firmly. Mobile phones are debasing the social atmosphere"?.

Local officials have begun investigations, saying that such bans cannot be allowed in a healthy society, while women's rights activists called it an assault on freedom that could potentially end up harming women by stripping them of one source of protection from trouble, such as unwanted advances by men.

"Girls and women are capable enough to protect themselves," said activist Suman Lal during a debate on local television. "Technology is meant to be used, not to be banned...The order is nauseating."

Fellow activist Mohammad Islam said it was "disappointing" that the village council ignored the many advantages of mobile phones before placing a ban on them for one reason.

"I want every girl to be given a mobile phone so that she could call up family members if she has a problem"?, he said. ($1 = 54.6400 Indian rupees)
