$2.5 million grant to fund clinical trial at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center

Hospital-acquired infections are a huge public health burden, and hospital environments play a key role in harboring potentially deadly bacteria such as E. coli, C. difficile and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

These microbes may persist for extended periods in the hospital, on surfaces such as bed rails, doorknobs, chairs, tray tables, toilet seats and even call buttons in patient rooms.

Copper surfaces, which are not routinely used in hospitals, are known to kill bacteria on contact, and studies have found much lower levels of bacteria living on copper surfaces than on standard hospital surfaces.

Now, an interdisciplinary team from UCLA is taking this research to the next level. In one of the first randomized clinical trials of its kind, researchers will determine if the reduction of surface bacteria due to the use of copper will result in a decreased number of hospital-acquired infections.

Funding for the $2.5 million study will be provided by an RO1 grant (HS021188-01) from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The project will involve teams from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. The collaborative research initiative is a project of the UCLA Sustainable Technology and Policy Program.

For the clinical trial, two intensive care units at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center will be outfitted with copper, sham stainless steel, or conventional surfaces such as plastic or other types of coatings. Over a four-year period, all three surface types will be sampled for bacteria levels, and patient-infection outcomes rates will be compared among the three surfaces.

"We will be studying if lowering the level of bacteria on hospital surfaces results in reduced infection rates in patients, better outcomes and even lower costs," said the project's principal investigator, Dr. Daniel Uslan, director of the antimicrobial stewardship program at the Geffen School of Medicine and an assistant clinical professor of medicine in the division of infectious diseases.

Additional environmental microbiologic studies and evaluations of surface cleaning will be included in the research, as well as a detailed costbenefit analysis.

Dr. Peter Sinsheimer, executive director of the UCLA Sustainable Technology and Policy Program, a joint initiative of the Fielding School of Public Health and the UCLA School of Law, helped arrange the interdisciplinary collaborations.

"Being at UCLA makes it easy to pull together diverse teams of top-flight scientists to conduct such important prevention-based research," said Sinsheimer, whose program focuses on primary health prevention through materials substitution.

The initial idea for the hospital-based study came from Sinsheimer's research on the viability of alternatives to lead-based copper piping in delivering safer drinking water.

Hospital surfaces selected for the study will include bed rails, chairs, a bedside table that can also be positioned on top of the bed, and a mobile treatment cart-top used by nursing staff that includes handles, a keyboard and a mouse.

A team at UCLA Engineering will assist with the testing of the copper and other surfaces used in the clinical trial.

"We will be incorporating copper, plastic or sham stainless steel materials into the selected everyday surfaces used by patients and staff in the hospital," said Vijay Gupta, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.

The cost-effectiveness analysis will be conducted by Dr. Gerald Kominski, director of the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and a professor in the department of health policy and management at the Fielding School of Public Health.

"Finding effective interventions to reduce hospital infection rates in a cost-effective manner is an emerging priority for U.S. hospitals," Kominski said. "This study will provide valuable information on whether copper-touch surfaces are a cost-effective technology for achieving this goal."

Anna Wintour Takes In Wimbledon Matches, Smiles (PHOTOS)

"Sporty" is rarely a word we associate with Anna Wintour. But get the Vogue editor-in-chief in front of a tennis match and the woman turns into a expletive-spewing, beer drinking, foam finger-wearing sports maniac!

Well, sort of. Wintour, an avid tenis fan, engaged in some moderate cheering and even cracked a smile at Wimbledon 2012 this weekend, which she attended with partner John Shelby Bryan. The editrix watched from the Royal Box (you know, where Kate and William sit) and socialized with Important People including Miroslava Vavrinec, Roger Federer's wife. (Anna's a big Federer fan, putting him in the pages of Vogue.)

So what does the ruler of the fashion world wear to a tennis match? Prada, of course.

Check out Anna going (moderately) wild for her favorite sport.

Harriet Lerner: The Top 10 Reasons Women Re-Marry The Wrong Guys

If you're in the emotional aftermath of divorce, the last thing on your mind may be coupling up again. Even the thought of going on a date may be as appealing as a plate of overcooked liver dressed with dry brussels sprouts.

Still, you just might find yourself back in the saddle sooner than you think. Half of divorced women remarry in less than five years, and 75 percent have remarried after ten. And if you're still reeling from the anger and pain of your divorce, you may put more careful judgment into buying a new toaster oven than evaluating a prospective partner.

We all know pretty much what we're looking for in a partner. We may have also learned a few lessons from a previous failed marriage. While individual tastes vary, we want a partner who is mature and intelligent, loyal and trustworthy, loving and attentive, sensitive and open, kind and nurturing, competent and responsible and, of course, "hot." I've yet to meet a woman who says, "Well, to be honest, I'm hoping to find an irresponsible, distant, ill-tempered sort of guy who sulks a lot and won't pick up after himself."

But the kind of person we say we want and who we're actually drawn to, settle for, or put up with are different matters entirely. What's going on here?

Women have a great deal of intelligence when it comes to relationships. Generally speaking, women know men far better than men know women. The problem is that things get in the way of our otherwise good judgment when men are involved.

To avoid marrying another future ex-husband, consider the top 10 reasons women choose the wrong mates:

1. Timing: We're most prone to fall mindlessly in love at difficult emotional junctures -- on the heels of a divorce or an important loss, for example -- when we're least likely to think clearly.

2. Steamy starts: The rush of sexual attraction can act like a drug and blur our capacity for clear thinking. This can lead us to distance ourselves from our friends or even abandon our life plan for someone who couldn't otherwise be relied on to water our plants and feed our cat.

3. Obsession: Being obsessed with a guy is not a measure of anything but the level of underground anxiety we are carrying around. We can easily confuse intensity with closeness when, in fact, intensity blocks us from taking an objective look at our partner, ourselves, and the dance we're doing together.

4. Idealization: We're convinced he's so brilliant and special, that we put him above us. Perhaps he has a gift we don't possess -- for example, he has a photographic memory, or a gift for solving mathematical mysteries and conjugating Latin verbs. Discerning his strengths and weaknesses is part of knowing him better, but an idealized view leads us to undervalue our own gifts and ignore his shortcomings We may continue the relationship in a trance, blind to signs that something isn't right.

5. Repeating family patterns: We're vulnerable to repeating history, especially if we don't know what's driving us. For example, it may be a family tradition to marry someone with addiction problems, or who is an injured bird in need of caretaking. Or, you may be drawn to guys who remind you of your distant, unavailable father -- or your ill-tempered mother -- with the unconscious belief that you can take an old story, and through the power of your love, give it a new, happy ending.

6. Rebelling against family patterns: If your dad was a tyrant, you may be drawn to someone who is so passive and voiceless that the same qualities that attracted you will later drive you crazy. When we need to push the differences with family members -- or with an ex-spouse, for that matter -- we land in trouble.

7. Desperation: Your two best friends just got married, you're about to turn forty, and someone reminds you that your biological clock is ticking. As the "tick tock" gets louder, you compromise on something that really matters, or you ignore the big red flags waving in your face. You figure that half a loaf is better than none.

8. Lack of self-focus: You're looking for someone to fill up your empty bucket, give you some kind of direction, or provide meaning in your life. Poor choices happen when we're not putting our primary energy into having our own life plan and figuring out how to live our own life (not someone else's) as well as possible.

9. Lack of self-love: It's a clich?, but also a deep truth (as clich?'s tend to be), that you can't love another person very well if you don't love yourself. If your self-esteem is low (as it tends to be post-divorce), you won't believe that you are truly worthy of love and respect. Your choices will reflect this.

10. Fear of the future: Your anxious brain wakes you at 3:00am with scary pictures of your future without a mate. Fear has never helped anybody make good choices. It leads to clinging when we should be walking.

My advice: Take your time, slow things down and stay clear-headed in order to gather a more objective picture of a prospective mate. Don't insulate your relationship with him from other important relationships, even if he says he wants to spend time only with you. You won't really know him if you don't make sure to observe him among both your friends and family and his.

Get out sooner rather than later when you spot a big red flag waving in your face. Keep your primary focus on your own goals and life plan, which will put you on firmest footing whether you marry again or not. And never forget that there are many possibilities for intimacy and connection other than pairing up again.

Russia Floods Kill At Least 78

MOSCOW -- Torrential rains dropped nearly a foot of water on a Black Sea region in southern Russia overnight, setting off intense flooding that killed at least 78 people and forced some in the largely rural area to take refuge in trees and on roofs, officials said Saturday.

Muddy water coursed through streets and homes in the Krasnodar region, in some cases high enough to flow over the hoods of cars. In some areas, people waded through waist-high water or maneuvered the streets in boats. About 5,000 residences were flooded, the Krasnodar governor was quoted as telling the Interfax news agency.

Igor Zhelyabin, a spokesman for the Krasnodar Interior Ministry, said 67 of the deaths were in the area of the hard-hit town of Krimsk, about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) south of Moscow. Many people were asleep when the flooding hit, and scrambled to safety, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

State news agency RIA Novosti said five people died of electrical shock in the Black Sea coastal city of Gelendzhik after a transformer fell into the water.

State news channel Rossiya 24 showed video of area residents rescuing people in small, inflatable boats and others slogging glumly through flooded homes.

"It came so fast!" exclaimed one woman, whose name was not given, waving an arm in frustration at the shin-deep water in her living room, where a large teddy bear sat on a sofa.

As of 10 a.m. Saturday, more than 28 centimeters (11 inches) of rain had fallen in Gelendzhik since the previous evening, the state meteorological service said.

Gelendzhik is on the Black Sea coast, and along with the area around it, is a popular summer vacation spot, including many children's camps. Vice-premier Olga Golodets told RIA Novosti that some 7,100 children were at holiday camps in the area, and that with 459 children had to be evacuated.

The area also includes Novorossiisk, a major Black Sea port. The Transneft oil company said Saturday it has suspended loading oil onto tankers at the port because of the severe weather.

More than 1,500 Emergency Ministry officials were working to aid flood victims and clean up the damage, state TV said.

redsn0w updated to version 0.9.14b2 with fixes for downgrading iPhone baseband

If you've got an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS and need to downgrade the baseband but were recently having issues, or were unable to downgrade, the iPhone Dev Team have released an updated version of redsn0w that may now support your device.

It's worth noting that the new version will still not support the 2012 iPhone 3GS model as the chipset is incompatible with the 06.15.00 iPad baseband. If you run redsn0w on the newer versions you'll most likely brick it so make sure you're checking your serial to confirm that your iPhone 3G or 3GS is compatible with the new version. You can do so by checking out our tutorial:

If you need help or run into issues, hop into our forums via the link below for help and for answers to many already asked questions. If you need to download the newer version of redsn0w you can also do that via our downloads page under the redsn0w section.

Galaxy Nexus Android Phone Banned in Apple-Samsung Patent Case

While Apple and Samsung's phones and tablets battle it out on store shelves, the companies (and Google) have been battling it out in the courtroom in ongoing patent disputes. Apple has accused Samsung and Google with its Android software of copying the workings of its iPhones and iPads. Earlier this week the dispute came to a head as a California judge granted Apple an injunction - banning the sale of Samsung's Galaxy Nexus smartphone until the case is argued.

"In sum, Apple has shown a likelihood of establishing both infringement and validity," Judge Lucy Koh wrote in granting the injunction. The judge ordered Apple to post a $96 million bond for the injunction to take effect. Apple posted the money on Tuesday, making it illegal for the Galaxy Nexus phone to be sold in the U.S.

Samsung filed a motion to stay the ban, but Koh denied the request.

The Galaxy Nexus was the first phone to ship with Google's Android 4.0 operating system, known as Ice Cream Sandwich.

The injunction is primarily over the "Quick Search Box" found on the Galaxy Nexus, a feature that allows users to search the phone's memory and the web at once. Apple said it already holds a patent for a "universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system."

On Monday night the Galaxy Nexus phone was pulled from Google's Play Store.

"Samsung is disappointed with the court's decision that denied our motion to stay. We believe today's ruling will ultimately reduce the availability of superior products to consumers in the United States," a Samsung spokesperson told ABC News. "We will continue to pursue an appeal of the Galaxy Nexus preliminary injunction, which we filed on July 2 to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Meanwhile, we are also working closely with Google to resolve this matter, as the patent in question concerns Google's unified search function."

Google told the technology site The Verge that it planned to issue a software update that would fix some of the disputed patent issues. The update, the company said, would disable users' ability to search the phone and just allow them to search the web. Thursday afternoon, no such update had been sent out to Galaxy Nexus phones. Google did not respond to ABC News' request for comment.

Apple's patent war with Google and Samsung continues. While Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that he doesn't enjoy the litigation and went as far to call it a "pain in the ass," he also said, "We just don't want people ripping us off."
