OSWIECIM, Poland (AP) -The Italy and Netherlands teams took breaks from their European Championship preparations Wednesday to make solemn and emotional visits to the former Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps.

All 23 Italy players, coach Cesare Prandelli and team staff toured the system that Nazi Germany operated during World War II. They were escorted by three Italian survivors of the Holocaust - 81-year-old Samuel Modiano, 84-year-old Hanna Weiss and Piero Terracina.

At Birkenau, Italian players sat on rail lines once used to bring prisoners in as the survivors explained their experiences of horror and survival after their families were exterminated. Moved to tears, players then embraced the trio one by one.

"The image that stuck in my eyes was when they showed us their tattoos, the numbers on their arms," Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini said. "And the way they told us about being taken away from their families right there on those tracks. I think their stories touched all of our hearts."

As Italy walked out, the Netherlands squad arrived for a similar visit. Wearing dark vests and coats, grim-faced Dutch players moved from room to room in a solemn procession. Some with hands stuck deep in their pockets, others snapping pictures of the austere surroundings as they were led around by a guide, the Dutch visit almost coincided with that of the Italians.

The contrast of the day could not have been sharper since the team later prepared for a public training session in the heart of Krakow ,expected to draw about 25,000 fans.

"It leaves you in shock. You can't not come here," Italy midfielder Riccardo Montolivo said. "It's a time for introspection."

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon deposited a bouquet of white, red and green flowers - the colors of Italy's flag - at an execution wall and each player deposited a candle.

"Our generations are fortunate in that we've only seen these horrors in films and books," Chiellini said. "But having it right in front of your eyes, where it happened, and hearing from those who lived through it, is really incredible.

"I told my brother, `If you come to see a match, you should go to the camps, too. It leaves you with emotions that are difficult to forget,"' Chiellini added.

As the survivors spoke, other visitors to the camp snapped photos of Mario Balotelli and Italy's other well-known players.

"I hope this visit serves a purpose for them, and that they'll return home with a bit more baggage, and that they'll understand there's no difference between one person and another," Modiano said. "We're all equal. There are no different races."

Modiano was 13 when he was deported from the island of Rhodes, which was part of Italy from 1912-47. It is now part of Greece.

"Rhodes was all Italian. We were taken by the Germans in Rhodes as Italian Jews and deported to the concentration camps," he said. "The trip from Rhodes lasted a month."

The entire Jewish community of 2,500 was deported by the Germans, according to Modiano.

"In 6-7 months at Birkenau, only 31 men and 120 women survived," he said. "So if the Russians had arrived a week later, nobody would have survived. After many centuries on that beautiful island, the community was completely erased."

Auschwitz-Birkenau is the most notorious of a system of death camps that Nazi Germany operated on Polish soil after invading the neighboring country during World War II. The Holocaust was carried out to a large extent in occupied Poland, because it had Europe's largest Jewish population and it was at the heart of a railway network that allowed the Nazis to easily transport Jews there from elsewhere in Europe.

Historians estimate that between 1.1 and 1.5 million people died in Auschwitz, either in gas chambers, from being shot or from starvation and disease. Most of the victims were Jews, but the Nazis also killed many Poles, Soviet prisoners of wars, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, gays and political opponents there.

"Maybe they've seen the documentaries, but it's completely different when you actually come to the place and see it with your own eyes and hear some witness accounts, because there are not many of us alive today," added Modiano, who now lives in Rome.

"For years, we've been asking ourselves why we survived and others didn't. Maybe God chose some of us to tell our stories so this never happens again," Modiano said. "That's our mission."

Today, Auschwitz is one of Europe's most visited Holocaust remembrance sites, with a record number of 1.4 million visitors last year. While the large number of visitors is seen as important for Holocaust education, the mass tourism is also adding strain to the barracks and other structures. Many are already in a state of severe dilapidation because of the passage of time, and the officials overseeing the site are struggling to preserve what they can.

Weiss was 16 when she arrived at Auschwitz from Fiume, a town that was part of Italy from 1924-47 and is now in Croatia. She moved to Israel and became a nurse after losing her mother, sister, grandparents and other relatives during the war.

She spent 8 1/2 months at Auschwitz, from May 1944 until the camp's liberation by Soviet troops in January 1945.

"When I arrived in Israel after the war, nobody wanted to listen to us," Weiss said. "Now people are listening, so that's welcome."

Weiss wasn't sure what to say about problems of anti-Semitism inside some football stadiums.

"I don't know the national team and I don't know the players, but I hope that this visit can help," Weiss said. "The thing that disturbs me most in Italy and in Europe is denial of what happened."

Added Chiellini, "We've already been affected by these things at the stadium, and now we're even more sensitive to these issues."

Mike's On the Rocks: Long Island Iced Tea - Food Lush

by Tara

I'm a big fan of mixed drinks, but don't have them very often because buying lots of liquor seems to add up faster than buying lots of wine. Probably my math is flawed, but I'm okay with that. I really like Long Island Iced Teas, and have been eyeing the Mike's cooler of it my last few visits to my favorite liquor store.

Photo (9)

Ignore my daughter's wagon in the background.

My initial description to my husband: It would be good on a boat.

Elaboration: I liked it. A LOT. But I don't think I'd drink it all the time. Or in place of an actual Long Island Iced Tea. But at a BBQ or on a boat or on the golf course? Great! It had a very Mike's taste to it, which wasn't bad at all, just distinct.?

To do a comparison, I had a real Long Island Iced Tea at dinner on Saturday night.

Photo (8)

(Photos from: me)

I still prefer the original, but I will put the canned version on my shopping list for family BBQs or trips on a friend's boat.

Do you have a favorite cooler drink?

EMERSON LAKE & PALMER Brain Salad Surgery music review by ...

4 stars The last true ELP album before the fall. Even if I love Works, I have to admit that Brain Salad Surgery is the last meaningful and "progressive" thing that the trio has done.

First of all a bit of trivia: The album's title is inspired to fellatio, and if you look carefully you can see the hidden shape of a penis below the mouth on the sleeve design of that Mr. Ginger who has drown the ambient and the monsters of Alien.

The structure of the album is quite similar to that of Tarkus with one difference: the side- long epic starts on side A as it was really too long for a vinyl.

The album is opened by "Jerusalem". It's a religious Anglican anthem with lyrics of William Blake which has been proposed also by Vangelis on Chariots of Fire and later by Par Lindh project, even if in that case we can speak of a "cover" as it's almost identical to the ELP version, apart for the singer who's not at Lake's level. (A lack of Lake....nice joke).

The "Toccata" is the arrangement of a theme from a contemporary Argentinian composer, Alberto Evaristo Ginastera (1916-1983) who was happy enough of the result as on the internal sleeve is present his comment.

The Lake's acoustic ballad is "Still.. You Turn Me On". It has the role of songs like Lucky Man or From The Beginning on the previous albums. It's one of the highlights for me, as I'm a fan of Lake's vocals and it's still progressive enough. Nothing to do with most of his side on Works.

Instead of the poor "Are You Ready Eddie?" or the outplaced "The Sheriff" we have "Benny The Bouncer" that's a nice short rock and roll song and then....the epic.

"Karn Evil #9" with the joke with "Carnival" is a very complex song. Somebody has written that it's a disconnected sequence of different things, but I honestly feel it like a unique thing. At least there are no sudden transitions and in any case all the pieces of the patchwork are very good and in line with the best of the trio. In the CD releases it's more evident as the suite can stay "all together into a single track instead of being split between the two sides of the vinyl. Also if you consider that this epic has been played live for a number of years, even during the last tours of the trio, it means that ELP still believe in this track.

    "Welcome back my friends...."

Lil Wayne says he feels 'unwanted' at Okla. Arena

(AP) ? Lil Wayne said that after a recent NBA playoffs ticket dispute he felt unwelcome and "unwanted" at the Oklahoma City arena and isn't planning to return.

The rapper said two Thunder players ? Kevin Durant and James Harden ? had reached out to offer him tickets to Saturday's fourth game of the Western Conference Finals.

"That's not the point, though," he told The Associated Press in an interview Friday night. "It's the players stepping up but of course the players aren't white. I don't want to be sitting there on behalf of you and I'm sitting next to a (person) that's like 'I don't want this (guy) sitting next to me.' (Forget) you ... I'm in Forbes," he said, laughing.

Lil Wayne claimed in a tweet Thursday night that he had been "denied by the team to be in their arena." The team responded by saying the seats he wanted were already taken.

But the Grammy-winning rapper, appearing at a Macy's store in Los Angeles to promote his Trukfit clothing line, described a more complicated scenario.

He said he typically procures tickets for such games "from this guy named Mike." Lil Wayne said Mike had requested special security, parking and entrance for the rapper, but Mike said the team responded that they would only sell the seats for Mike's personal use.

Lil Wayne said a manager had advised him not to return to the city's arena for sports events or concerts, but "I never say never."

He said he felt welcome at other arenas including Miami, and likes being able to energize players ? many of whom are fans of his music ? on their home court.

"That's like me going on stage and ... seeing LeBron (James) in the crowd with his hand up. I'm going to perform a little bit harder," he said.

But in Oklahoma, he said that while "the players want me there, I don't want to feel ? I'm going to still feel unwanted."

"Of course, when someone tells Lil Wayne, 'No,' that he can't come in, 'We're sold out,' you feel a certain way. Unfortunately, it had to go down like that," said Durant, the three-time NBA scoring champion.

"We'd have loved to have him here in Oklahoma City. We'd have welcomed him with open arms. Hopefully, we get past that and next time he can come and enjoy a game."

A team spokesman has said Lil Wayne's representatives insisted that he sit in the front row, and none of those seats were available. Oklahoma City sold out every home game during the regular season and playoffs.

"It was just a misunderstanding. We were sold out of tickets, I heard, and we didn't come through," Durant said. "He knows a few of us on the team and he knows it's nothing like that. We offered him tickets to tonight but he had to do something. He's a superstar in his own right, so he can't just pick up and go to a game.

"He had something to do, but I'm sure if his schedule was free, he would have came tonight. We're still inviting him to games ? maybe not this year. Next year or whatever."
