China says man dies of bird flu (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? A man in southern China's Guangdong province died of bird flu Saturday a week after being admitted to hospital with a fever, state media reported.

The 39-year-old bus driver living in Shenzhen, just across the border from Hong Kong, developed symptoms on December 21 and was admitted to a hospital on December 25 because of severe pneumonia, the official Xinhua news agency said.

He died in the early afternoon of multiple organ failure, having tested positive for the H5N1 virus, the report added.

He had no direct contact with poultry in the month prior to getting sick and had not left the city, Xinhua said.

Guangdong's official newspaper, the Southern Daily, said separately that 120 people who had contact with the man had developed no signs of sickness.

About 10 days ago Hong Kong culled 17,000 chickens at a wholesale poultry market and suspended all imports of live chickens from mainland China for 21 days after a dead chicken there tested positive for the H5N1 virus.

The virus is normally found in birds but can jump to people who do not have immunity to it. Researchers worry it could mutate into a form that would spread around the world and kill millions.

In recent years, the virus has become active in various parts of the world, mainly in east Asia, during the cooler months.

Authorities in China are worried about the spread of infectious diseases around this time when millions of Chinese travel in crowded buses and trains across the country to go home to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

The current strain of H5N1 is highly pathogenic, kills most species of birds and up to 60 percent of the people it infects.

Since 2003, it has infected 573 people around the world, killing 336.

The virus also kills migratory birds but species that manage to survive can carry and disperse the virus to new, uninfected locations.

It transmits less easily between people but there have been clusters of infections in people in Indonesia and Thailand in the past.

Ferguson says he's staying at United 3 more years

updated 8:41 a.m. ET Dec. 31, 2011

MANCHESTER, England - Alex Ferguson celebrated his 70th birthday Saturday by pledging to stay as Manchester United's manager for at least another three years.

Ferguson told the famed soccer club's in-house TV channel he still hungers for more trophies even after 25 years in charge of the team.

"I think I've got three years with the club," Ferguson said. "As long as my health stays up, as long as I'm still enjoying it, still giving the satisfaction of the team doing its best."

Ferguson has been reluctant to discuss retirement since announcing a decade ago he would quit after the 2001-02 season. He went back on that promise at midseason and has since led the club to another four league titles ? with last season's triumph giving United a record 19 overall. He has won 27 major trophies with United, including two Champions League titles and five FA Cups.

"You don't win every time. I've had plenty of defeats. But, in the context of the achievements, it's minuscule, the defeats," Ferguson said. "We're all very good at losing here. People say we're great winners, but we're also great losers. You know why? Because we don't let it happen too many times."

Ferguson was greeted by a standing ovation at Old Trafford before United's game against Blackburn on Saturday and serenaded with "Happy Birthday." The Scotsman celebrated his 25th anniversary as manager of United in November and the club marked the occasion by naming a stand at Old Trafford after him.

He's had a few setbacks this season, with United knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage and facing a stiff challenge from crosstown rival Manchester City for the league title. With United in a bit of a rebuilding phase, Ferguson said there is still a lot of work to be done.

"The new players coming into the club ? (Phil) Jones, (Chris) Smalling, Ashley Young ? they didn't win any league medals yet," he said. "We have to continue the dominance of winning leagues and also, without question, winning the European Cup is important to the club. We should have been in at least three other (Champions League) finals. So, yes, I'd be very keen to win a third one."

WASHINGTON. January 1. KAZINFORM US President Barack Obama has signed into law a major defence bill including tough new sanctions against Iran, Kazinform refers to BBC.

WASHINGTON. January 1. KAZINFORM US President Barack Obama has signed into law a major defence bill including tough new sanctions against Iran, Kazinform refers to BBC.

The law cuts off from the US financial system foreign firms that do business with Iran's central bank.

But Mr Obama stressed that he had concerns about parts of the legislation dealing with the handling of foreign terror suspects.

"The fact that I support this bill as a whole does not mean I agree with everything in it," Mr Obama said.

The president signed the law in Hawaii, where he is on holiday. The move comes at a times of heightened tension over the Iranian nuclear programme.

Western powers say Tehran is seeking to acquire a nuclear weapons capability, but Iran insists the programme is purely for energy and medical purposes.

In recent weeks the US has introduced sanctions against Iran's financial sector, although it has stopped short of targeting the central bank outright.

Tussle with Congress

President Obama had been cautious about harsher sanctions, fearing such a move could disrupt oil markets at a time of economic uncertainty, and alienate potential allies.

The bill, which was passed by wide majorities in both houses of Congress, gives the president the power to grant a six-month grace period to give oil markets time to factor them in.

The president's signature comes after months of wrangling between Congress and the White House over trying terror suspects.

President Obama opposed provisions that would have eliminated the authority of the executive to use civilian courts for such cases.

He agreed to sign the bill after the provision was dropped.

The new law only requires military custody for suspects accused of planning attacks on the US or its coalition partners.

Mr Obama insisted that he would not "authorise the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens".

Libyan rebel chief warns Egypt over pro-Gaddafi TV (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? A powerful Libyan militia leader warned Egypt Saturday he would use force to close its embassy and shut the border if the military rulers failed to cut off a Gaddafi-era state television station that has broadcast footage of his old speeches.

Abdullah Naker, the commander of Tripoli's Revolutionist Council, said Egypt's Nilesat satellite broadcaster had allowed Muammar Gaddafi's official Al Jamahiriya station to broadcast last week.

The station had no signal Saturday, but residents in Tripoli said they had watched the channel, which had the same name and logo as Al Jamahiriya, broadcasting Friday.

Naker said the channel was funded by businessmen loyal to the leader who was killed in October and started broadcasting last week.

"The broadcast of the channel (Al Jamahiriya) should be stopped immediately," Naker told a news conference at his base in the headquarters of a state-owned construction company on the outskirts of Tripoli.

"We will take all measures, including the closing of the border, expelling Egyptians and closing down the Egyptian embassy and consulate."

A Nilesat official said the state-run station's broadcasts had been cut off for several months.

A government official said the interim Foreign Mininstry would contact the Egyptian government to "solve the issue this television station through diplomatic channels."

Naker's warning is the latest indicator that Libya is still largely controlled by hundreds of militias that helped topple Gaddafi despite the interim government efforts to disband them by including the former rebels in the military, police and the civil service.

"We will not take permission from anyone," Naker said. "We will take all necessary actions to protect our revolution."

It was not the first time Naker had made such strong statements.

He warned in an interview with Reuters last month that his men could overthrow the government even before it was appointed if it failed to meet their demands for representation.

Naker's threats are hard to assess, but he says he controls thousands of fighters.

More Frustration For Boston College Hockey; Eagles Fall To Michigan 4-2

Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, site of the Great Lakes Invitational.

What is it with BC and midseason slumps? It seems every year we go through a stretch where it just seems like nothing can go right. Tonight was more of the same as BC fell to Michigan in the GLI semifinals, 4-2.

There were a lot of glaring issues in this game. First, the team didn't show up to play in the first period. BC once again played from behind most of the game - not a formula for winning hockey. Michigan scored early, just a minute and a half into the game, to go up 1-0, and scored again on a 5 on 3 late in the period to head into the locker room 2-0.

BC thought it would be a good idea to show up for the 2nd, and show up they did. In what was, for the most part, an absolutely sparkling period for the Eagles, BC roared back to tie the game. First, on easily the best shift of the game, BC managed to get the puck in the net after a full minute or two of possession in the Michigan zone. The Wolverines were completely gassed by the time the rubber hit the twine, and those on the ice were only too happy to take a seat. A few minutes later, BC got the equalizer on a power play.

Unfortunately, late in the third period, Michigan scored on a 2 on 1 break completely against the run of play to retake the lead for good at 3-2. The Wolverines iced it with an empty netter in the third.

Those odd-man rushes were really the story of the game. It's partially a product of BC's up-tempo style of play, but it just seemed like Michigan had a 2 on 1 or a clean breakaway every minute or two of this game. It was a theme all night and was the primary reason we lost the game. The biggest goals of the game - the first and third ones - were both the result of Michigan 2 on 1s.

Aside from those goals and the goal Michigan scored on the two-man advantage, Billett was superb. I know, I know, it's a classic "other than those two times he wasn't good, he was really good." But the fact of the matter is, without Billett in net, BC probably loses this game by a lot more. His rebounds were also much improved - much, much improved - though the second goal was a direct result of a bad rebound bouncing two feet from the goal line in the blue of the crease... *Facepalm*.

Less seasoned BC fans might start to get worried about the team right now, going 4-6-0 since mid-November, and no one would blame them. It can get frustrating. But this is pretty much par for the course for Boston College. Start out strong, go through a mind-knumbing mid-season stretch where we are frustrated at times and God-awful at others, and then go on a huge 2nd half run. BC actually looked like a national championship team for the first 16 minutes of the 2nd period, so it's clear the talent is there. Also, the addition of Bill Arnold, who is representing the USA in World Juniors, would definitely have helped.

Oh, and by the way... BC is somehow *still* ranked #3 in the pairwise rankings after the loss today.

BC plays Michigan Tech (Really? Michigan Tech?) in the GLI Consolation Game tomorrow afternoon.
